Some agencies require you to submit written responses describing your particular
knowledge, skills or abilities relating to specific, job related situations.
The application may ask you to "Describe a situation..." or "Tell us more about a
time you..." It is important for you to take the time to write a concise, meaningful
response to these questions. We recommend using the Situation, Action, Outcome
approach in your response.
- Describe the situation.
- Describe the actions you took to resolve the challenge of the situation.
- Describe the outcome of your actions.
Be sure to use quantifiable terms in your response. In general, agencies will
score your responses and assign you a rating between 0 and 100. The agency may
have you complete other assessments in addition to the written responses. Be sure
to read the vacancy announcement carefully to see which method, or methods, the
